Top Things to Do in South Devon this Spring

South Devon is lucky enough to be home to a whole host of attractions, from family adventure parks, historical houses and castles, through to exploring sandy shores and pretty harbourside towns.

We’ve suggested some of the best things for you to do during your stay in South Devon this Spring, and these are just a handful of recommendations…

1/Make Your Own Gin

The award-winning Salcombe Gin is hand crafted on a beautiful 450l copper pot still and distilled over in Salcombe across the estuary. Their Headquarters boasts a gin bar, a gin shop and a gin school so if you’re a gin lover this has your name all over it. From the Cricket Inn you can access the pretty harbour town of Salcombe by car (approx. 14 miles) or you can drive to East Portlemouth and hop on the foot ferry to Salcombe town and enjoy the spectacular estuary views at the same time.

2/Walk the Coast Path

The South West Coast Path spans a huge 630 miles. Whether you’re looking to go the whole hog or just enjoy a light hike, The Cricket Inn offers the ideal base for food, drink and accommodation. We’re about 12 miles to Dartmouth or 10 miles to Salcombe along the path and Start Point lighthouse is a mere 2 miles away in comparison. During summer you can enjoy tours of the lighthouse too!

3/Hop on a Steam Train

Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company is unique in offering combined steam railway, river and sea adventures for days out in Devon. The Round Robin is an award-winning full day out – a steam train journey, ferry crossing, river cruise and bus ride, it is easy to see why it’s got the title it deserves. Great way to see the quaint towns of Totnes, Paignton and Dartmouth.

4/Visit Agatha Christie’s Holiday Home

Take a glimpse into the beloved holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family. This relaxed and atmospheric house is set in the 1950s, when Agatha and her family would spend summers and Christmas together, relaxing by the river, playing croquet and reading her latest mystery to their guests. There are many ways to get there, including ferry, vintage bus and steam train. If you’d like to arrive by car you must pre-book your parking space online or by telephone (01803 842382).

5/Attend South Devon Events

During the Spring and Summer months there are an abundance of local events to get involved with…mostly around food, drink and music – the best combination we think! What’s coming up:

  • Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival
  • Exeter Food and Drink Festival – 4th-6th May
  • Salcombe Crab Festival – Sunday 5th May
  • Dart Music Festival – 10th, 11th, 12th May
  • Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival – 31st May-2nd June
