Suppliers

We’re a strong believer that fresh and local is best and we’re spoilt with the number of great suppliers right on our doorstep. From crab, lobster and scallops caught directly from the Bay, gin from Salcombe and Dartmouth, and fruit and vegetables grown and picked in Newton Abbott; we buy only the top quality, freshest ingredients and have a focus on being as sustainable as possible.

Alan & Winkie Steer

Alan is a third-generation shell fisherman, having had the business passed down to him by his father Winkie who is now semi-retired. The Steers provide us with top quality seafood, delivered daily to our door. Alan specialises in trawling lobster and crab and his hand dived Beesands scallops are some of the best out there.

During the summer months, there is an abundance of mackerel and seabass in the Bay which also gets delivered straight to the pub doors.

Alan fishes sustainably with any undersized specimens or females with eggs immediately returned to the water. Sustainability is a priority and under The Inshore Potting Agreement (IPA) he has his set area which he maintains to ensure healthy stock levels and good catches.

Dartmouth Gin

The Dartmouth Distillery Company create Dartmouth English Gin using the finest botanicals which they source from around the World. Their other ingredients, including fresh herbs, flowers and fruit as well as the essential fresh spring water, are all sourced from the Calancombe Estate also in South Devon and combined produce the remarkably smooth, full-bodied spirit. Dartmouth Distillery Company have installed 20kw of solar panels onto their distillery roof to offset the carbon footprint of their gin production, as well as planting thousands of fruit trees, vines and fruit bushes at the Calancombe Estate to help the environment.

Devonia Water

Both our still and sparkling water is Devonia natural spring water, the only water company in the UK that wash and reuse their glass bottles. Devonia’s water is bottled at source from a spring that bubbles up on the edge of a meadow near the villages of Beeson and Beesands, a mere stone’s throw from The Cricket Inn itself.

Devonia Water collects the empty bottles from us on a weekly basis, wash the bottles and reuse them, reducing our carbon footprint by up to 16 times whilst supplying us with a premium product for our customers to enjoy.

Otter Brewery

Otter Brewery is a brewery based near Honiton in Devon and is named after the nearby River Otter.

They pride themselves on never compromising the quality of their beer and have always selected the best quality malting barley from a number of the UK’s finest maltsters.

Using a variety of hops gives them the ability to brew beers with flavours and aromas to suit the modern palate.

The water used in the brewing process is drawn from their own wells that are sprung through the aquifer from the headsprings of the River Otter, ensuring the beers they produce are sustainable as well as a pleasure to drink!

Owens Coffee

Owens Coffee are based in Ivybridge and they have a large focus on maintaining close relationships with global importers which helps them to achieve its goal to treat everyone in the supply chain - including the planet - with respect.

Sustainability has been at the heart of their business from day one, this includes looking after the people and communities involved in the production of their coffee, as well as the environment.

Owens Coffee use Arabica beans which are 100% organically grown; with no chemicals and more slowly, which contributes to a fuller flavour profile. All of the farmers are Fair-trade, which means they are paid a fair price and have the assurance of good working conditions and their coffee is certified by the Soil Association.

To comply with the Soil Association’s organic standards, they must have full traceability from farmer to importer, and throughout the entire roasting process.

Rise Bakery

The Rise Bakery, based in Plymouth, sources only the best local ingredients to use in their delicious baked goods.

Not only does this mean their products are as fresh as they can be, but it means by collaborating with local suppliers they can play their part to help reinvest in their local community by supporting the local economy. They also offer nationwide postal delivery, so are able to promote local ingredients to other parts of the country.

Using local ingredients means lower carbon footprint too, something which is a key focus for them. Using local ingredients helps to reduce our carbon footprint and this is something we’re always looking to improve on as a business. They have partnered with the ‘Too Good To Go’ app which ensures that any waste they have at the end of the day goes to their local homelessness charity.

S&J Fisheries

S&J Fisheries are a family-owned business based in Plymouth who has been supplying fish and seafood since 1985. They pride themselves on sourcing the best quality produce from a wide list of trusted suppliers. All of their fish and seafood is all sourced in a traceable and responsible manner.

S&J supplies us daily with fresh fish, for both our á la carte menu, as well as our daily specials.

Salcombe Brewery

Based in Kingsbridge, Salcombe Brewery began brewing their award-winning beers back in September 2016. The brewhouse is uniquely built on the site of a decommissioned water reservoir that utilises the natural ambient temperature to store the brewed beer at the perfect temperature. They also have their own borehole which supplies the brewery with its own source of Devonian water.

They have a Heritage range which represents the traditional British cask and bottled ales, a craft beer Discovery range as well as limited edition beers launched throughout the year. Their seahorse logo is a nod towards the Salcombe Estuary being one of the few places in the UK you can find the rarer of the two species. 5p of every bottle of Seahorse is donated to The Seahorse Trust to help raise funds and support the endangered creatures.

Salcombe Dairy

Salcombe Dairy only use natural ingredients and has had their milk delivered from the same local farm for over 40 years. They don’t over-process their ingredients to ensure they retain their flavour and nutrients.

Their chocolate is made from scratch using organic, fair-trade cocoa nibs, and their wide range of ice-cream flavours (many of which we have on offer for dessert), including their recently launched decadent vegan ice cream, have all been carefully and lovingly developed.

They ensure that more than 10% of their profits are donated to charity and they also take an active role in supporting the local community including free ice cream for schools.

Salcombe Gin

The multi-award-winning gin is distilled and crafted in Salcombe. Inspired by the coastline and the shipbuilding heritage of the popular seaside town, Salcombe Distilling Co. creates its exceptional gin at its waterside distillery, one of the world’s only distilleries directly accessible by boat.

As a nod to the history of the sailing vessels bringing in fresh fruits and spices from around the world to England’s ports, they harness the essence of this by using only the finest citrus fruits and spices to flavour their gin.

We stock a variety of their popular gins including the original Start Point, their Rosé Sainte Marie and more recently their alcohol-free version- London Light.

Sandford Orchards

Founded in 2002, Sandford Orchards are an independent, family-owned cider producer based in the heart of Devon and are very proud to be based in the oldest working cider mill in the UK, breathing life back into the old building.

They grow their own cider apples in some of the finest bittersweet apple orchards in the world and add no artificial flavours or aromas. By using the best natural ingredients and then letting it age to perfection, the result is a delicious, balanced and naturally refreshing cider you can enjoy at The Cricket Inn.

Smithfield Meat Market

Smithfield is the largest wholesale meat market in the UK and one of the largest of its kind in Europe with modern state of the art facilities for receiving, storing and dispatching of meat and poultry.

Although based in central London, much of its produce comes from Devon itself as well as from Surrey Farm, where they maintain ethical farming and ensure the humane treatment of their farm animals.

St Austell Brewery

St Austell Brewery are a proudly independent and family-owned business based in Cornwall, just 30 miles west of the Devon border. They have been around since 1851 when the incredibly popular pale ale was created, then called Daylight Robbery, but now known as Tribute.

Today they have a portfolio of more than 190 pubs, inns and hotels across the West Country. The Cricket Inn and The Church House Inn being two of them!

Tamar Fresh

Tamar Fresh is a family-run business who have been supplying high-quality, local produce across Cornwall and Devon for more than 30 years.

Tamar Fresh was started by Francis Barrett in 1988. He learnt the trade working for a fruit and vegetable wholesaler before he had the opportunity to have his own shop and Tamar Fresh was born.

Many of their staff have been with them since the beginning and between them, they have well over 100 years of experience and knowledge.

Their team comes from a range of backgrounds across the food supply sector, with specialists not just in fruit and vegetables but also dairy, dried goods and prepared food.
