Beesands

Beesands derived from 'bay sands', was first inhabited in the late 18th century when the threat from seaward pirates had diminished, although fishing has been carried out from its shores for more than 600 years. When the first ordnance survey was published in 1805 there were 6 dwellings at the southern end of the village and by the first national census of 1841, 104 men women & children were living here in 17 houses, with the majority of families being supported by a living from the sea. The first public house 'The Kings Arms' (which closed in 1910) was opened in 1823 by Susan Crocker and by 1851 there was a grocery store run by Sally Logan.

The Cricket Inn was opened in 1867 by Philip Prettejohn, who's daughter Elizabeth Ann was born at The Cricket Inn and was the last inhabitant of the old village of Hallsands that was swept away in the storm of 1917 (see places of interest). There was a time when Beesands had two shops two pubs a bakery and later a petrol station now only The Cricket Inn survives.

Fishing continued to be the main source of employment until the early 1970's when the introduction of wire crab pots, large trawlers and mechanical winches saw the decline of the beach launched boats, we still have three 'Skippers' who own trawlers operating from Dartmouth living in Beesands who are descendants of those original families, and yes some of there catch ends up in The Cricket Inn.

Beesands makes a great beach side base for those wanting to explore South Devon and is a Mecca for Walkers and Hikers as it is located on the South West Coastal Path. The beach is one of 33 yellow/blue flag beaches, this coupled with no amusement arcades, bingo halls and free yes free parking makes it the perfect place to visit in fact its like 'The Land Time Forgot', so lets keep it a secret.
